Peter Raven Tabbed For National Geographic’s Top Honor
Former Missouri Botanical Garden president Peter H. Raven will on Thursday be awarded the Hubbard Medal from the National Geographic Society. Doctor Raven, 82, is an internationally renowned botanist who was hired in 1971 to direct the garden. He retired in 2010 and was succeeded by Peter Wyse Jackson. The medal is National Geographic’s highest honor and lauds lifetime achievement in research, discovery, and exploration.
Once described by Time magazine as a “Hero for the Planet,” Raven is a trustee of the National Geographic Society and chairman of the society’s research and exploration committee. Previous winners of the Hubbard, first awarded in 1906, including astronaut John Glenn, aviators Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh, primatologist Jane Goodall and Neil deGrasse Tyson.
